Adaptive Recreation on Folly Beach: Charleston County Parks’ Wheel to Surf event returns in May

Fun, physical activities and sports should be a part of life for everyone, and the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission (CCPRC) wants to provide all residents of the community the opportunity to enjoy them. On Saturday, May 12, CCPRC will partner with other organizations to provide individuals with physical disabilities an opportunity to experience surfing during an event called Wheel to Surf at Folly Beach County Park.

From 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. May 12, participants can ride the waves with expert assistance and modified surfing equipment at Folly Beach County Park. Adaptive surfing staff from a variety of partner organizations will provide instruction and assistance in a controlled environment.

“We have been fortunate to partner with Ocean Cure, The Adaptive Surf Project, Coastal Carolina Adaptive Sports and Wheel to Surf to offer an adaptive surfing opportunity for the Charleston Community for the past three years,” said Susie Goudy, assistant director of recreation for CCPRC. “These amazing non-profit organizations provide the expertise, equipment and enthusiasm that has made this program such a great success.”

Admission for the Wheel to Surf clinic is free, but all interested participants are required to pre-register and meet essential eligibility requirements in order to participate. For more information about Wheel to Surf or to register for this event, visit CharlestonCountyParks.com or call 843-795-4386.

Volunteers are being recruited for this event. For more information on volunteering with CCPRC, call 843-795-4386 or visit CharlestonCountyParks.com/Volunteer.

In March, CCPRC opened an accessible beach path and other accessible amenities at Folly Beach County Park through the assistance of a grant from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. CCPRC strives to help visitors discover how the agency’s 11,000 acres of parkland can enrich their lives, promote physical and emotional well-being, and provide venues for fitness and peaceful respite.
