National Society of Black Engineers Honors Top Corporate and Government Supporters of Engineering Diversity
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) has honored 34 organizations and individuals with annual awards for their support of engineering diversity. The Chairman’s Awards and Gene Washington Champions of Champions Awards were presented at NSBE’s 44th Annual Convention, which brought more than 13,400 attendees and more than 250 sponsoring organizations to Pittsburgh, Pa., on March 21–25, for the Society’s largest-ever event.
NSBE, with more than 17,000 members, is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States. Broad corporate and government agency support help make possible the programs and activities NSBE utilizes to advance its mission and move toward its main 10-year strategic goal, which is to lead the U.S. to produce 10,000 black engineers annually, with bachelor’s degrees, by 2025.
NSBE’s 2018 Chairman’s Awards honored 12 organizations that made a positive impact on black communities by investing more than $100,000 in NSBE during the 2017–18 fiscal year. The Gene Washington Champion of Champions Awards for 2018 recognized 22 individual representatives of organizations on NSBE’s Board of Corporate Affiliates (BCA) who went above and beyond the call of duty within their organizations on NSBE’s behalf. The BCA is the Society’s top-level supporters. Gene Washington, a longtime executive at 3M, now retired, played a prominent role in founding the BCA.
“NSBE is reaching for higher goals than ever, and the support given by our corporate and government supporters is critical to our success,” said NSBE National Chair Matthew C. Nelson. “These awards demonstrate our appreciation for their outstanding support of our mission.”
“The partnerships NSBE has established with these award recipients prove that diversity and inclusion are alive and growing in America,” said NSBE Executive Director Karl W. Reid, Ed.D. “With the commitment and collaboration demonstrated here, we will meet our goals of community empowerment and strengthening the nation’s technical workforce.”
