THE CALHOUN MONUMENTS AND THEIR CRITICS—FROM THE 19TH CENTURY TO TODAY: Thursday, March 15, 2018 – 6:00 PM to 7:45 PM at Charleston County Public Library Main Branch –  Since the tragic shootings at Emanuel AME Church in 2015, Confederate and white supremacist memorials, including the Calhoun Monument in Marion Square, have come under increased scrutiny.  In this lecture, Blain Roberts and Ethan Kytle, professors of history at California State University, Fresno, will explore the history of Charleston’s two Calhoun monuments and the resistance that they have provoked from the nineteenth century until today. Their talk is drawn from Drs. Roberts and Kytle’s new book, Denmark Vesey’s Garden: Slavery and Memory in the Cradle of the Confederacy, which will be available for purchase courtesy of Blue Bicycle Books.  There will be a book signing after the lecture.
