Hideaways Exhibit Opens at the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry

The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry (CML) is opening Hideaways, a new hands-on exhibit where children use their imagination to build hiding places and create new worlds. The exhibit will open for a special event, Valentine’s Pajama Party, on Saturday, February 10 at 9:00 a.m. The exhibit will open to the public on Saturday, February 10 at 11:00 a.m.

In this play-based exhibit, children are invited to stretch their imaginations and explore the possibilities of pillows, blankets, dowels, fasteners, hooks, and a whimsical play space. The Hideaways exhibit consists of four sections of creative PLAY:

  • The Biggest Bed: Climb, slide and hide on, under and around a fantastical bed built just for the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry by exhibit partners, Maxtrix® Kids Rooms, a locally owned and operated Children’s furniture store specializing in versatile solid wood Bunk and Loft Beds.
  • Tents-sational!: Using dowels and stick-lets ® of many colors and sizes, kids can really go out on a limb fashioning tents in whatever size or shape catches their fancy.
  • Hoop-houses: Hoops mounted from the ceiling change our perspective and multiply the possibilities of what and how we build – the sky (or at least the ceiling) is the limit!
  • Toddler Spot: Little ones 3 and under have a special place to explore, play hide and seek, explore object permanence, and enjoy their own tiny hideaway.
Executive Director, Nichole Myles, expects Hideaways to be a big hit, drawing all ages of Lowcountry children into the Children’s Museum. “Building and playing in Hideaways encourages critical thinking skills as children work alone or in groups to design and create their playspace. This takes creative thinking, trial and error, and the ability to work through issues that arise. When tackled cooperatively by siblings, friends, or with caregivers, children develop communication, teamwork and collaboration skills,” she said.

Hideaways will be installed through August and is free for CML Members and CML ticket-holders. To purchase tickets for the Valentine’s Pajama Party, visit exploreCML.org/cml-events/valentine-party.
