MOUNT ZION AME CHURCH CELEBRATES 135 YEARS OF GOD’S GREATNESS AND LOVE – On Sunday, October 15, 2017, at 10:00 am, the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church, located at 5 Glebe Street will celebrate its 135th anniversary.  The congregation had its first church service on October 19, 1882, after separating from Mother Emanuel AME Church because of overcrowding.  Mount Zion AME Church continues to worship God and be of service to mankind and its members’ many initiatives to build bridges of understanding and connections in the community.

Ms. Mignon Clyburn, Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will deliver the keynote address for this occasion.  Ms. Clyburn spent eleven years as a member of the sixth district on the Public Service Commission (PSC) and is a longtime champion of consumers and a defender of the public interest.  She has dedicated her efforts in developing media ownership rules that reflect the demographics of America, affordable universal telephone and high-speed internet access, and transparency in regulation.   Prior to her service on the PSC, Ms. Clyburn was the publisher and general manager of The Coastal Times, a Charleston-based weekly newspaper that focused on issues affecting the African American community.

The public is invited and encouraged to attend this celebration, as visitors and friends join Reverend Dr. Kylon Middleton, Senior Pastor, and the Mount Zion AME Church congregation in recognizing “One Hundred and Thirty-five Years of God’s Greatness and Love”.  Ms. Clyburn will share how faith has worked in her life and directed the focus of her interests in service to God, fellow citizens of South Carolina and the United States.  A reception will follow the program.
