Lowcountry Voices, the immensely popular community choir based out of North Charleston, will be taking the music of the Lowcountry to Toronto, Canada on its Biennial Summer Tour, July 25-30, 2017. 45 persons will be traveling in the group including 35 choir members, the Director, Nathan L. Nelson, and Assistant Director/Accompanist, Sandra S. Barnhardt. The remainder of the tour group consists of family members and avid followers of LCV.
In the short 6 years since Nate Nelson founded the choir, they have traveled on two previous summer tours – in 2013 to New York & New Jersey; in 2015 to Bermuda via Celebrity Cruise Lines, and now in the summer of 2017 to Toronto, Canada.
“The choir members work so hard all year long, and look forward to an international trip whenever we can schedule one”, states Barnhardt, Events Manager and Tour Coordinator. “Believe it or not, they always want to return to New York and New Jersey, and hopefully they will get their wish in 2018.”
The choir usually chooses a tour destination based on if there is some sort of personal connection or family within the location. The second criteria for choosing a location for a tour is will it also serve as a great place to vacation.
Toronto met both criteria in that it’s an exciting city in which to vacation with ongoing festivals and carnivals and major tourist attractions, i.e. the CN Tower, and St. Michael’s Cathedral. Secondly, there are family members of LCV’s Security Manager, Owen Hinds, who are waiting to greet and host the choir in Toronto at its Farewell Dinner the night before the choir returns back to Charleston.
The itinerary includes tours of several famous places as well as the Toronto City Hall. The choir will perform at St. Michael’s Cathedral and at the Toronto’s largest tourist attraction – Casa Loma. However the highlight for many will be the first time visit to Niagara Falls. Several have registered for the famous Maid of the Mist ride under the Falls where you are guaranteed to get wet. As you can see, there is much anticipated excitement surrounding this summer tour.
Nathan L. Nelson, LCV’s founder and Director states, “The choir is rehearsing tirelessly to present and represent Charleston with the best music from the Low Country tradition. We’re preparing to showcase all genres of music that LCV performs here in the Low Country – classical, jazz, anthems, hymns, and of course, traditional and contemporary gospel music. We’re going to give Toronto a little taste of the exciting and eclectic music culture from the Charleston community.”
Toronto better get ready to hold onto their hats! Nate Nelson and Lowcountry Voices are set to bring their own musical excitement to our Canadian friends in the North. For further information about Lowcountry Voices, visit the website at www.lowcountryvoices.com.
