First Choice by Select Health of South Carolina Launches Mission GED Program

Mission GED is newest education benefit offered to First Choice plan members

First Choice by Select Health of South Carolina is now accepting qualified applicants for its new Mission GED program. First Choice Medicaid health plan members are eligible to receive vouchers covering the entire cost of the initial General Educational Development (GED) test and one retake, if needed. Select Health offers the First Choice Medicaid health plan to South Carolina residents and is part of the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies.

“Education and better health go hand in hand, so we’re committed to encouraging and supporting our members as they take steps toward improving their futures,” said Rebecca Engelman, market president of Select Health. “A GED also provides opportunities to find better employment, earn a raise, pursue a college degree or enlist in the military.”

The link between educational attainment, socioeconomic status and population health has been well established. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, individuals with higher levels of education and higher income have lower rates of many chronic diseases, are less likely to smoke, are expected to live longer lives, and are more likely to engage in preventive health services compared to those with less education and lower income levels.

To participate, you must be an eligible First Choice member at the time of enrollment into the program, be at least 19 years old and not currently have a high school diploma or GED. Applications, complete program information and registration instructions are available at the First Choice website. First Choice members can also call 1-888-276-2020 (TTY 1-888-765-9586) for more information and to request an application form by mail.
