A sweet, sweet spirit permeated Mother Emanuel’s Sanctuary as members and visitors entered for Worship Service on Sunday, April 30, 2017. Excitement heightened amongst members about the “Special Presentations” that would take place that day. Twenty lifetime members of Emanuel’s Legends would be honored.
Faithful, dedicated, and committed are just a few words to describe Emanuel’s Legends. They are multi-talented and hard workers who have given their best in time, talents, and tithes to the church for the past 75+ years. The Legends are from diverse backgrounds and professions. All were babies baptized in the church; as teens they learned about the life of Jesus Christ, Scriptures and many hymns; as adults they made a difference in the church and the community. Through the years they mentored many and served as positive role models. Above all, these Legends are just great members who love their God, their church, and its members.
Female Legends honored were Sisters Felicia S.Breeland, Annabelle B. Capers, Bernice Cohen, Delores A. Davis, Eva J. Dilligard, Edna Dixon, Martha Drayton, Victoria Homes, Christina Grant, Lillian Greene, Marguerite Gregorie, Ruby N. Martin, Mildred Polite, Doris Coaxum Sanders, Mary J. Scott, Mary J. Smith, and Flo Myers White. Male Legends were Brothers Oscar Fordham, Robert “Bob” Sanders, and Frank Taylor, Sr.
The special recognition started as each Legend received a beautiful crystal plaque and a corsage or a boutonniere. Next, congratulatory words were expressed by the Pastor and Chairman. It ended as Sis. Sherell Greene Lucas’ melodious voiced pierced our hearts and soothed our souls as she serenaded the Legends with a favorite, “My Tribute”.
This special presentation was the brainchild of Sis. Sherell Lucas. After service one Sunday, she said to a few members, “We need to honor our lifetime members before we lose them”. That was all it took! A small group organized and the rest is history!
A huge thank you goes to the committee: Bro. Leon Alston, Sisters Sherell Lucas, Chairman, and Theodora Watson. You did an outstanding job! Special thanks to Pastor Eric S.C. Manning for his leadership and willingness to support this type of well- deserved tribute. It is my desire that this inaugural program will continue for many years to come.
