Cheryl Swinton

Charleston County School District (CCSD) is proud to announce and welcome Cheryl Swinton as the new Executive Principal of Burke High and Simmons Pinckney Middle School. Swinton brings with her a wealth of knowledge to this role having served at Wando High School as first an Assistant Principal, then Associate Principal for the past 15 years.

Swinton first joined the CCSD family in 1984 as a Family and Consumer Science Teacher at Burke High School having previously served in the same position at McCracken Jr. High and Lexington High in South Carolina from 1979 to 1983.

In 1992, Swinton took the post of Job Placement/Co-op Coordinator at Burke for two years before moving on to serve as a guidance counselor at Garrett Academy from 1994-1996. After briefly departing the District to work as the Guidance Director and a curriculum specialist at Waccamaw High in Pawleys Island, SC, Swinton returned to CCSD in 2002 as an assistant principal at Wando. Swinton served in this position until becoming an Associate Principal at Wando in 2014 where she was responsible for the direction of the Center for Advanced Studies and supervised all career and technology education (CTE) programs.

Throughout her career, Swinton has assisted in school to workplace transition programming and planning, supervised and facilitated guidance counseling and student support services programs, overseen CTE curriculum and teacher evaluations, coordinated testing and textbook distribution schedules, directed Wando’s Ninth Grade Academy and supervised Freshman Focus, implemented Wando’s intervention and CORE team, facilitated community outreach and middle school articulation and recruitment programs, and developed positive intervention programming such as Wando’s Golden Warrior Program.

“Cheryl has the experience, expertise, and skills to effectively lead the Burke and Simmons Pinckney communities,” said CCSD Superintendent Gerrita Postlewait. “We are excited to welcome her back to her first place of employment in the District nearly three decades ago. We know she will bring great opportunities to the students and families we serve in District 20.”

Swinton received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Family and Consumer Science from Winthrop University, and a Master of Education in Secondary Guidance and Counseling and a degree in Secondary School Administration from The Citadel.

    Hi Ms. Swinton,

Congratulations on your position at Burke High School!

I am currently at James B. Edwards in Special Education in a .5 position. I love the school and administration, however, I have to procure a 1.0 position. I am applying at Carolina Park Elementary School for a 1.0 Special Education position for SY 2019-2020.

I would like to keep your name as a reference on my resume.

    Thank you so much.
