The 12th Annual Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2017, from 9 to 4 at the Mount Pleasant Waterfront Park and Sweetgrass Pavilion, 99 Harry Hallman Blvd.

This year’s Featured Basket Maker is Joann G. Brown, a fifth-generation basket artist. She began the artistry of her ancestors at the age of five. “I still remember how I felt when I designed and sold my first trivet. How excited I was to sit along Highway 17 with my mother to work and sell my next piece of art.”

The highly anticipated Sweetgrass Festival provides a showcase for a very large selection of fine quality sweetgrass baskets as well as other arts and crafts, a variety of entertainment, basket making demonstrations, and a range of food vendors.

The Gullah Geechee Seminar is held in conjunction with the Festival, and includes speakers who address the issues facing Gullah Geechee Communities in our region. The Seminar will be held in the Cooper River Room at the same location.

The mission of the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Association is to preserve the traditions and legacy of the Gullah Geechee culture, including the sweetgrass basket making art form.

For more information, including a schedule of activities for the Festival and Seminar, please visit www.sweetgrass.org or the Facebook page, @sweetgrassculturalarts

The Association has received many awards for its work, and the South Carolina Arts Commission has recently announced that the Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Association is a recipient of the 2017 Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Award.
