Thinking of trying a triathlon? Charleston County Parks is offering the public training opportunities to be a triathlete at James Island County Park!

The Sprint Triathlon 101 Clinic offers people who are interested in competing in a sprint triathlon the ability to receive professional, on-site training on the actual Charleston Sprint Triathlon race course. The clinic is instructed by local triathlete Kayla Edwards and participants receive the tools and motivation needed to complete the run, bike and swim race.

Held at James Island County Park, the eight-week clinic is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m., from March 28 through May 18. Course registration includes entry into the first Charleston Sprint Triathlon race of the series, held at the park on Sunday, May 21.

The training clinic is perfect for those competing in their first triathlon or for those who have competed previously and are looking for helpful training tips. Each participant receives professional land-based and race course specific instruction. The class is open for ages 16 and up.

"What better way to gain confidence and skills than on the actual course with a seasoned, award-winning triathlete and veteran Charleston sprint triathlon participant!” said Allison Foster, fitness and wellness program manager for the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission. “We are thrilled to have Kayla leading the 2017 program. This is an incredible opportunity to get insider tips, whether this is your first triathlon or you’re simply looking to return to the series and improve your times.”

The Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series (CSTS) offers five swim-bike-run events spanning May through August each year. Athletes are encouraged to sign up for one race, or compete in multiple races in the series. Held at James Island County Park, the Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series features a 600-yard freshwater swim, a 12-mile bike ride, and a 5K flat run. Clinic sessions will offer the unique opportunity to train on the actual CSTS race course.

The 27th annual CSTS kicks off on May 21, with other races held on June 18, July 9, and July 30. The series finishes with the Championship Race on Aug. 13. This final race combines points from previous races, and awards are presented to both individual race champions and series champions.

Over 30,000 athletes have raced in the CSTS since it began in 1991, and the race has been named a Top Ten Charleston Signature Sport Event by the Charleston Metro Sports Council.

CCPRC is committed to keeping county residents active and healthy. To register for the Triathlon 101 series, or other wellness programs offered at county park locations through the Move IT! Charleston County program, visit or call 843-795-4386.
