Hospice care comes to the Sea Islands

Sea Island Comprehensive Health Care Corporation (SICHCC) is adding hospice to the agency’s array of health options. It will begin operating in the spring. Sea Island’s CEO, Tumiko Rucker says this program will focus on educating minorities who often don’t fully embrace the concept of hospice.

“Minorities historically haven’t taken full advantage of hospice. We want to change that attitude. We’ll provide education seminars at local churches so people understand the types of support that are available through hospice.”

SICHCC will provide in-home hospice so there will be no need for the patient to relocate.

“In-home hospice will allow families, church families and neighbors to visit the patient. It will also provide ongoing support for the family prior to, during and following the loss of the loved one for up to 13 months.” according to Rucker.

Demett Jenkins who is the granddaughter of Esau Jenkins, the founder of SICHCC, will serve as the chaplain and bereavement coordinator.

Rucker says the addition of hospice will fulfill a full continuum of care that Sea Island Comprehensive Health Care offers.

“From pregnancy and infant care through WIC to First Steps, to total family care supplied at the Fetter medical clinic. We also have independent living for seniors and the disabled at Johns Island rural housing.”

SICHCC also provides respite and daily living support at its Adult Daycare and home health care services. The delivery of durable medical equipment will also start this year. Rucker says Sea Island Comprehensive Health Care Corporation is living up to its mission.

“Which is to provide quality health care and sustain healthy lifestyles and living conditions for residents of the Sea Islands and surrounding communities.”
