Do you think that the North Charleston Police Department has taken appropriate steps towards reform a year after the Walter Scott shooting?
Frustration Continues As African-American Community Seeks Justice In Roof Case

Dylann Roof
Staff Reports

Opening statements are set to begin Wednesday in the Dylann Roof Murder trial following the mistrial of the other local high profile murder case of former North Charleston Police Officer Michael Slager.

The African-American community is frustrated after the result findings in the Slager case and hopes for a better outcome in the Roof trials.

“At this point, we just want justice,” said one community member. “How long will we have to wait for the system to do right by us?”

The Roof trial shenanigans have already begun as the accuser initially asked to defend himself in the trial. He later changed his mind and a judge granted his decision to reverse the motion to allow his attorneys to oversee his defense.

However, Roof will represent himself during sentencing which will determine if he will get the death sentence or life in prison without parole.

Roof is accused of fatally shooting nine black parishioners at Mother Emanuel AME Church on the evening of June 17, 2015. As opening statements and witness questioning begins this week, the black community will keep a keen eye on the trial and pray that justice will finally be served.
“We don’t know what to expect, but with the evidence at hand a murder conviction is expected. We had video evidence of murder in the Slager case, and we all know what happened with that. All we can do is pray for the best, the system can’t be trusted,” a community member said.
