Servicemen, servicewomen to fish Charleston as part of Military Appreciation Day

Military Appreciation Day, Inc. is hosting its second Charleston Military Appreciation Day (MAD) on Saturday, Nov 12.

MAD events are hosted in multiple states on the East Coast and allow volunteers to take active duty troops out for a full day of inshore and/or offshore fishing. At the end of the day, the troops, along with their families and boat volunteers, are treated to a Southern-style cookout. All activities and services are free of charge to members of the military.

In February of 2006, a newspaper in Wilmington, N.C., published a story about restaurants that were refusing entry to a group of Marines who had just returned from tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. In response, Rodney Carroll, Dan Smith and John Polosky decided to raise money and host an event that would be a show of support for the men and women in the U.S. military. Volunteers came from North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. And the first-ever Military Appreciation Day took place on May 20, 2006, with participation from 225 servicemen and servicewomen.

Military Appreciation Day, Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization consisting of a board of directors and several committee chairs who coordinate events carried out by legions of volunteers.
