Workshop - Flower Arranging: The Secret Language of Ikebana

Ikebana, the art of Japanese flower arrangement, is considered an art form in its own right alongside painting and sculpture. It is a representation of the Japanese spiritual philosophy that stresses harmony between man and nature. What distinguishes ikebana from Western forms of flower arrangement is the heavy reliance on negative space to create an asymmetrical, lively composition. Under the instruction of Kathy Huang, participants will complete two arrangements to take home: one in the ikebana style and one in the free style. Influenced by her grandmothers, who were master gardeners in Asia, Kathy Huang has unique training in cut flower arrangements of the Japanese Ikebana style.  She has been inspired by her adventurous travels while living and working in the United States for the past 30 years and has studied under ikebana masters in Asia. Materials are provided.

Fee:  $40, materials included.  Registration closes October 31.  Call 843-740-5854.

11th Annual African American Fiber Art Exhibition

African American fiber artists from across the nation are invited to participate in the 11th Annual African American Fiber Art Exhibition: Move on Up and Reach the Higher Ground, a component of the 2017 North Charleston Arts Fest. The theme for this year’s exhibition is inspired by the aspirational music of the 1970’s that sought to unify and lift the spirit of our nation, specifically songs such as Stevie Wonder’s Higher Ground and Move On Up by Curtis Mayfield. As we find ourselves, once again, in a time of great division and unrest, the challenge for this special exhibit is for artists to create a fiber work, such as an art quilt, doll, wearable art piece, etc., that explores the ideas of creating a better world, journeying toward self-awareness, and ascending to a position of loving acceptance of all citizens. Organized and presented by the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department, and curated by Torreah “Cookie” Washington, this unique opportunity offers African American fiber artists a showcase to exhibit their original and innovative designs. The application will be available on November 1 and can be accessed at NorthCharlestonCulturalArtsDepartment.SlideRoom.com.

Deadline for submission of application: Wednesday, March 1, 2017
