City of Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg

Mayor John Tecklenburg met with community and neighborhood leaders to collaborate on the city’s three-step plan for the BI-LO site on Meeting Street on Tuesday.

First, in the short term, the city is partnering with the Lowcountry Street Grocery, a local farmers market organization, to assure that affordable, high-quality fresh fruits, vegetables and meats will be available to Eastside and Midtown neighborhood residents when the BI-LO store closes.

Second, the city is working with CARTA to create a shuttle service for former BI-LO customers, running from the BI-LO site to the Food Lion and CVS shopping center on upper King Street.

Third, the city is developing a series of targeted incentives to attract a new grocer to the property if and when the site is redeveloped.

“As I said last week, maintaining a useful, diverse mix of businesses throughout the city is a critical aspect of neighborhood livability and quality of life for our citizens,” Mayor Tecklenburg said. "I look forward to working with the site owners, neighborhood residents, and local and regional leaders to ensure that our citizens continue to have access to affordable, high-quality groceries in this area of our city."
