Charleston: My Adopted Home by Helen K. Beacham

Helen K. Beacham fell in love with watercolor as a medium and with Charleston when she moved to the area 10 years ago. Her exhibit blends these two loves in a collection of watercolor paintings that depict snippets of Lowcountry life.

Join author, actor, and former U.S. Army Captain and combat leader Bob Rogers for this one-act play about the life of Lt. Henry O. Flipper, a former slave who fought in the Apache Wars after being the first African American to graduate from West Point. Lt. Flipper was court martialed in 1881, and after being charged with embezzlement, was dismissed from the U.S. Army.

Lowcountry History Series: Escaping Slavery in Early South Carolina

Tens of thousands of Africans were brought to early South Carolina to work as enslaved laborers, but a small percentage of that number managed to find a path to freedom long before the abolition of slavery in 1865. Join CCPL's historian, Dr. Nic Butler, for an exploration of various ways and means of escaping slavery, and learn about specific men and women who found freedom in early South Carolina.
