Staff Reports - Students in Charleston County returned to class on Monday for the 2016-17 school year with enthusiastic hopes of extending their educational journey. Chicora Elementary, one on several schools with a new building, hopes to make an impact on the poverty-stricken community.

The school shut it doors in 2011 after being an elementary school in the Chicora-Cherokee community for nearly a century. Members of the community have been fighting for a new school ever since.

Charleston County School District Superintendent Dr. Gerrita Postlewait visited the new facility during her First Day of School Tour on Monday. She was impressed with the new digs and sees an opportunity to reshape the community.

“I watched parents come into the school last week in awe of the magnitude of the building and proud to be part of this community. It’s not a reason to put a school in a neighborhood that is trying to recover itself, but when that happens it is an opportunity to make sure that the quality of construction that we deliver is at the same caliber of other facilities to start building a renewed sense of community pride,” she said.

Regarding the district overall, challenges for the upcoming school year Postlewait hopes to improve upon includes closing the achievement gap, disparities in disciplinary rates, safety and improved transportation.
