The congregation of Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church played host to a variety of visitors as it held its first anniversary Sunday morning service nearly one year after the tragic event on the night of June 17th 2015. Reverend Betty Deas Clark ministered to a nearly packed church that had several dignitaries among its pews.

Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg was among those and played and sang a stirring rendition of Amazing Grace on the church’s piano. The International President of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated was in attendance as well as a host of the members of the local chapter of the organization.

Grand Basileus Antonio Knox Sr. presented a donation in the amount of nine thousand dollars in honor of the Emanuel Nine on behalf of the Fraternity. The organization’s Sixth District Representative Howard Jackson presented a donation of one thousand dollars on behalf of the members of his district.

The local chapter, Mu Alpha, was on hand and made a presentation of an interactive chip that will be featured as part of a bronze memorial that will be placed on the church grounds. Visitors may learn about the church and the Emanuel Nine with any handheld PDA device by scanning the chip.

Nathaniel Jackson, member of the Mu Alpha Chapter, presented Deas-Clark with the chip as she raised it to the applause of the congregation.
