Staff Reports

Members of the National Action Network last week conducted a protest after presenting Charleston County School District Superintendent Dr. Gerrita Postlewait with a letter outlining concerns district management discriminates against minority employees in its food service department.

In a May 26 letter to Postlewait, NAN S.C. State Co-ordinator Elder James Johnson said the department’s head and his team of white male supervisors bully, harass, and degrade the predominantly black female employees in the food service department.

Johnson also alleged the supervisory staff discriminates against Title I and predominantly black schools in menu offerings and kitchen equipment. Some staff members are subjected to wage theft, he added.

NAN is asking the district to conduct an investigation into allegations being made by employees and called for the immediate termination of the department head.
