Kaiju?(??), a Japanese word meaning “strange beast,” is unique in pop culture. The "Godzillifications" on view interject these creatures into established works of art, photos or concepts to roar with satire or thunder at the footsteps of ecological and nuclear horror.

This student partnership emerged in the wake of the June 2015 Mother Emanuel church shooting to help kids from diverse backgrounds understand each other and themselves in new ways. Through the joint efforts of the community and donations to CCPL’s Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Fund, world-renowned street artist R. Robots painted a bright, wall-sized geometric mural of books on the side of the John L. Dart Branch Library – a branch managed by Hurd for 21 years of her 31-year career as a librarian. Leaders will come together to officially dedicate the mural, a permanent reminder of Hurd’s continuing influence on the community and her commitment to literacy. The mural was a collaboration between CCPL and Enough Pie and partially funded by a donation from Winston & Strawn LLP.

Following the shooting of nine victims at a June 2015 bible study at Emanuel AME Church, residents of the community and nation recognized the need to examine and learn from the events that led to the tragedy. Through in-depth interviews with the victim’s family, friends and community members, three authors penned We Are Charleston as a way to explore the impact of the shooting, the role of the AME church and importance of awareness, action and forgiveness. Authors Herb Frazier, Dr. Bernard Edward Powers Jr. and Marjory Wentworth will reflect on their journey and what they uncovered in this deeply emotional book. Copies of the book will be available to purchase, with a portion of the proceeds going to CCPL’s Cynthia Graham Hurd Memorial Fund. Attendees also will be able to donate directly to the Memorial Fund, created to honor the 31-year librarian’s legacy and commitment to literacy.
