Charleston County Parks is offering opportunities for the public to join the ranks of some of the most spirited athletes around – sprint triathletes!

The Sprint Triathlon 101 Clinic offers people who are interested in competing in a sprint triathlon the ability to receive professional, on-site training on the actual Charleston Sprint Triathlon race course.

Held at James Island County Park, the five-week clinic is on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:45 – 6:30 p.m., beginning April 19. Course registration includes entry into the first Charleston Sprint Triathlon race of the series, held at the park on Sunday, May 22.

The training clinic is perfect for those competing in their first triathlon or for those who have competed previously and are looking for helpful training tips. Each participant receives professional land-based and race course specific instruction. The class is open for ages 16 and up."We welcome new triathletes the opportunity to build confidence while training on the actual course, in addition to serving previous competitors looking to hone their skills and improve their times,” said Allison Foster, fitness and wellness program manager for the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission.

The Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series (CSTS) offers five swim-bike-run events spanning May through August each year. Athletes are encouraged to sign up for one race, or compete in multiple races in the series. Held at James Island County Park, the Charleston Sprint Triathlon Series features a 600-yard freshwater swim, a 12-mile bike ride, and a 5K flat run. Clinic sessions will offer the unique opportunity to train on the actual CSTS race course.

The 26th annual CSTS kicks off on May 22, with other races held on June 19, July 10, and July 31. The series finishes with the Championship Race on Aug. 14. This final race combines points from previous races, and awards are presented to both individual race champions and series champions.

Over 30,000 athletes have raced in the CSTS since it began in 1991, and the race has been named a Top Ten Charleston Signature Sport Event by the Charleston Metro Sports Council.

CCPRC is committed to keeping county residents active and healthy from the inside out. To register for the Triathlon 101 series, or other wellness programs offered at county park locations through the Move IT! Charleston County program, visit CharlestonCountyParks.com or call 843-795-4386.
