Tis the season for holiday traditions and edible delights! The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission’s annual Gingerbread Competition will be held once again to help kickoff this year’s Holiday Festival of Lights. Entries are due to James Island County Park on Nov. 9.

The competition allows participants to break free from the typical gingerbread house mold and let their imaginations run wild. Thus, participants can create a gingerbread train, lighthouse, or anything else desired.

The competition is open to any age or experience level and broken out into two divisions – original entries or kit entries. The original entries division will be further divided into the following age groups: the Adult division (18 and older), Youth division (ages 8-17), and Parent-Child division (parent plus child ages 3-7).

In the original category, the main structure of the gingerbread creations must be made of handmade gingerbread. No kits or kit components are allowed and the main structure cannot be made primarily of graham crackers, cookies, or similar pre-made products. There is also a kit category that is open to participants of all ages.

Participants are required to register for the competition by Nov. 6.
There is a $6 (or $5 for Charleston County residents) fee to sign up. Check-in for all entries is from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Edisto Hall in James Island County Park on Nov. 9. Judging will be based on five criteria including overall appearance, consistency of theme, difficulty, and precision-workmanship.  A total of eight awards will be given on Nov. 13 beginning at 7 p.m. at Santa’s Stage area in James Island County Park.

Participants are encouraged to use the 2015 festival tag line of “Believe in….” to inspire themselves for the gingerbread competition. Gather up the sugar and spices and visit CharlestonCountyParks.com today to official sign up to compete!

The Holiday Festival of Lights is open Nov. 13 through Jan. 3 and select entries will be on display throughout the duration of the festival.  For more information about the Holiday Festival of Lights Gingerbread Competition, visit , call 843-762-9507 or email the competition coordinator at .
