Communities In Schools of the Charleston Area Presents Music Tells The Story

Communities In Schools (CIS) of the Charleston Area, a dropout prevention organization that is part of the national Communities In Schools network, is proud to announce a new partnership with composer/songwriter/performer Ayala Asherov-Kalus that will culminate in a special performance on May 16, 2014 at 9:30 AM in the Edmund A. Burns Elementary School Auditorium in North Charleston.

Conceived by composer/songwriter/performer Ayala Asherov-Kalus working in partnership with CIS, Music Tells the Story is a pilot project to provide music education and enrichment for elementary school students to expand and inspire their developing reading and writing skills through creative expression and musical engagement. The May 16th concert will feature a performance of original compositions created by Asherov-Kalus from the writings of 4th grade students at Burns. A quintet of musicians from the Charleston Symphony and SC Philharmonic Orchestras will perform these new works, together with several more traditional pieces.

All of the school's 4th graders met with Ms. Asherov-Kalus earlier this year to learn about her work as a composer and to understand the connections between writing, story-telling, and music. From the students' subsequent writing projects, their teachers selected the top stories for Asherov-Kalus to transform into musical compositions that the students will hear for the first time at this concert. For many Charleston students - particularly those who attend schools in high-poverty areas - this project brings unique, first time exposure to professional musicians and to the powerful musical experiences they provide, an opportunity rarely if ever available to them.

In addition to CIS' involvement in the project, Music Tells The Story has also received support from the Nathan and Marlene Addlestone Foundation, City of Charleston Office of Cultural Affairs/City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Program and Target.
