Washington, DC –– The Arab American Institute Foundation (AAIF) will honor Marian Wright Edelman and the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) with the Award for Institutional Excellenceat 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16th at the fifteenth annual Kahlil Gibran “Sprit of Humanity” Awards Galaat JW Marriott Hotel, 1331 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC. For fourteen years, the Gibran awards have recognized individuals, organizations, and corporations whose work reflects the ideals of the great Lebanese-American poet by promoting inclusion, cooperation and greater understanding among people of diverse backgrounds.

“For forty years, the Children’s Defense Fund has been the nation’s strongest advocate for at-risk children and families,” said Arab American Institute President James Zogby. ” Its tireless work has resulted in significant policy changes and programs for children, bringing about better access to health care, education, and proper nutrition. We couldn’t be more pleased to honor their vital and important work at Gibran.”

“The Children’s Defense Fund and I are so grateful to receive the Khalil Gibran Award for Institutional Excellence from the Arab American Institute Foundation. Many new laws and policies have been enacted since CDF began that help millions of children today, but so much remains to be done to ensure a level playing field for all children. I believe the greatest threat to America’s national, military and economic security and democracy comes from no enemy without but from our failure to invest in healthy and educated children. Tomorrow is today. Now is the time to take daring steps to close the gap between what every child needs to grow to productive adulthood, what we know works, and what we do,” said Marian Wright Edelman, President of the Children’s Defense Fund.

Past recipients of the Award for Institution Excellence include, Reporters Without Borders, ALSAC - St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Amnesty International USA.
