Dr. Roland Carter

Lift Every Voice And Sing is known as the Black national anthem composed by J. Rosamund Johnson and brother James Weldon Johnson, the lyricist.

It has been sung by many famous vocalists, opera stars, and choirs worldwide, as well as played by many celebrated musicians and orchestras.

However, the most recent and most widely acclaimed arrangement of this iconic song was composed by Dr. Roland M. Carter, the prolific and highly regarded composer of African American spirituals and art songs.

This past year, Dr. Carter has traveled across the United States and to several foreign countries in a yearlong Birthday Tour in celebration of his upcoming 75th Birthday.

Its culmination will take place here in Charleston as the ever popular and much sought after Lowcountry Voices under the direction of Nathan L. Nelson will honor Dr. Carter in a musical tribute in honor of his 75th birthday which is May 5th.

Dr. Carter is Professor Emeritus of American Music at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he served for 24 years. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Carter was Director of Choirs at his undergraduate, alma mater, Hampton University, where his musical legacy had its beginning.

The recipient of numerous awards, Dr. Carter maintains and active schedule of workshops and guest conductor appearances worldwide, and is the founder and CEO of Mar-Vel, Inc., a music publisher specializing in the music of African American composers and traditions. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Shaw University, Raleigh, NC for his outstanding achievements and contributions to American music and most recently received the Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta, Georgia.

“This is by far the most humbling and inspirational concert that Lowcountry Voices has ever had the honor of preparing to perform”, states Director Nathan Nelson. “To be in the presence of one of the most admired composers in the world, and then to present his music in tribute with him sitting in the audience, well you can imagine the great anticipation that the choir and myself feel to be a part of celebrating Dr. Carter’s 75th birthday here in Charleston. It promises be a memorable musical experience for everyone!”

The concert which takes its theme from one of Dr. Carter’s most beloved and most often performed spirituals – In Bright Mansions, will be held on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at 5PM at the St. Peters AME Church, 4650 Saunders Street in N. Charleston, as one of the major events of the North Charleston Cultural Arts Festival. The concert will feature many of Dr. Carter’s repertoire of spirituals such as Ride On, Jesus, You Must Have That True Religion, Give Me Jesus, Rise, Shine, For The Light Is A Coming, and several others. Program participants will include featured guest choir, the world renown Claflin University Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Isaiah McGee, a celebrated award winning young soprano soloist, Ms. Corinthia Sims, and of course the host for this event – The Lowcountry Voices and Lowcountry Voices Concert Choir.

A highlight of the concert will be the singing of Lift Every Voice and Sing and In Bright Mansions to include anyone that has previously sung under Dr. Carter or has performed these selections in any choral experience. This invitation has generated many folks planning to attend from all over the country as this segment will be conducted by the maestro himself, Dr. Carter.

The choir is also hosting a 75th Birthday Reception for Dr. Carter, open to the public, on Saturday, May 6th at 4PM at the Ebenezer AME Church, 44 Nassau Street, Charleston. Admission to the Birthday Reception on May 6th is $20. and $10. to attend the concert on May 7th.
