We Who Believe by Lenora Brown, Arianne King Comer, Natalie Daise, Jacqueline Johnson, Catherine M. Lamkin, Michael D. Sanders and Torreah Cookie Washington

We Who Believe features fiber art, photography, and oil paintings that relate the artists’ expression of African-American life in America and Africa through stitches of hope, strokes of civil rights and inspiring camerawork. The title of this exhibition is based on a quote from civil rights activist Ella Baker.

The bold federal laws enacted after the Civil War to extend full civil rights to all in South Carolina largely failed, and by 1890, segregation was the status quo in the Palmetto State. Despite this fact, there were a handful of local civil rights triumphs in the early years of Reconstruction that deserve to be remembered. Join CCPL's historian, Dr. Nic Butler, for the stories of a few forgotten Charlestonians who tested the waters in the early days of the struggle for civil rights.

After the Civil War, the Academy of Music on King Street was the principal venue for traveling opera companies visiting Charleston. Join CCPL's historian, Dr. Nic Butler, for a look at the Academy's history and a sampling of the operatic repertoire heard by local audiences at the turn of the 20th century.

Photos or videos may be taken at CCPL events and activities for library use in promotion and publicity. 

Anyone not wanting to have their photo taken should notify library staff at the time of the event or activity.
