Darrell Singleton was recently named the Gatorade South Carolina Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year by The Gatorade Company and USA TODAY High School Sports. He is now a finalist for the National award.

Darrell Singleton broke stadium and meet records at this year’s 10th Annual Sandlapper Track & Field Classic when he ran the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.61.

Darrell Singleton competed in the 100-meter dash against former Olympians while in Cuba, coming in 7th out of 40 runners. He was also part of Team USA’s 4x100-meter relay team that came in 1st place with a time of 40.63.

Having signed with the University of South Carolina, Darrell Singleton will attend the school in the fall on an athletics scholarship to run track for the institution. He plans to major in either computer science or mechanical engineering.

Darrell Singleton has done it again! The West Ashley High School alum was recently named the Gatorade South Carolina Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year by The Gatorade Company and USA TODAY High School Sports.

This marks only the second time that a student from West Ashley High has been recognized by The Gatorade Company. Julie Bolt was named the Gatorade South Carolina Girls Soccer Athlete of the Year back in 2005.

The Gatorade Company says the award is designed to “recognize not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the track.” Singleton is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year Award which will be announced at the end of June.

It was a record-breaking year for Singleton, whose winning streak began back in March at the 10th Annual Sandlapper Track & Field Classic. He broke stadium and meet records in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.61. Singleton also placed 1st in the 200- meter dash that day was a time of 21.86. Next, he competed at the Taco Bell Track & Field Classic in Columbia, SC where he not only took 1st place in the 100-meter dash, but he set a PR of 10.48, which advanced him to 3rd in the Nation in the 100-meter dash. Singleton received the Outstanding Sprinter Award at that meet as well.

Singleton went on to compete in the 100 and 200-meter dash, along with the 4x100- meter relay at the Class AAAA State Meet, helping the Wildcats finish in 4th place overall. He placed 1st in both the 100 and 200-meter dash and came in 2nd place in the 4x100-meter relay. Singleton was then invited by the National Scholastic Athletics Foundation (NSAF) to be a part Team USA and compete alongside 28 athletes from high schools across the United States at the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational in Havana, Cuba at the end of May.

At the invitational, he competed in the 100-meter dash, placing 7th out of 40 runners. More than half of those Singleton competed against were professional runners or former Olympians. He was also the second leg of USA’s 4x100- meter relay team which came in 1st place with a time of 40.63. “I felt great racing against people who raced in past Olympic finals and semi-finals,” says Singleton. “It was a great experience!”

Among Singleton’s growing list of supporters is his longtime track coach, Douglas O’Donald.

“Darrell is a tremendous student athlete with a great outlook on life,” says O’Donald. “It’s been a pleasure coaching someone that has worked as hard as he has on and off the track. Darrell is eager to learn and has a strong desire to be the best. His work ethic speaks volumes to the accomplishments he will achieve.”
